The Weight of Silence

Depression

There are wounds that do not bleed visibly, yet they wear away the deepest structures of who we are.

from the book’s description

Depression is not a weakness of character or a lack of willpower. It is a serious health condition that affects the brain, the body and the emotions, and it can be treated. This book was written to take the subject out of silence and prejudice.

The author

From the founding of Rome to the bedtime story

José Carlos Savariz Caus writes about what endures through time. His books range from the legend of Romulus and Remus to the year the sun went dark, from the story of every pope to the patron saints of the Americas, from the letters of Hernán Cortés to the account of the Frenchman Jean de Léry on Brazil in 1556.

Alongside history, there is writing as care. In Anxiety, The Weight of Silence and Down, he addresses mental health and inclusion in plain language, for those who live through these situations and for those around them. In the Dissertations collection, he gathers quotes from great thinkers and writes an essay on each one. In Contos da Nossa Infância, he writes to be read aloud.

He has been publishing since 2023: 24 books in Portuguese, totaling 7,005 pages, and part of his work is already available in English and Spanish. The longest, Habemus Papam, runs to 1,768 pages. On his covers, he signs as Jose C. S. Caus.
